Description

When the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center needed to move to a larger facility to accommodate its rapidly expanding research program, UGAREF provided the means to accomplish the task.

UGA's Physical Master Plan mandates that all newly constructed buildings on the main campus be cohesive with the traditionally Georgian architecture of the historic North Campus.

However, the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center is located away from the main campus and adjacent to the Oconee River. This siting allowed for an architectural expression that responded directly to the building site.

The design is loosely based upon the mill buildings historically located along the Oconee River. The exterior incorporates masonry, wood, steel and granite - materials consistent with southern mill vernacular architecture.

The interior layout of the Center allows the glycoscientists to work closely together, enabling them to share findings and explore theories about the structures and functions of complex carbohydrates.
